Technical Writer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Technical Writer is responsible for the development of technical training materials, corresponding quizzes, written exams, and performance evaluations. This role will act to write training content, review and edit content, proof voice audio recordings of training content, align illustrative images with content, input content material into the proprietary system (E3), and test the final product before activation. The Technical Writer must be able to take a “hands-on approach”, influence, innovate, easily transition among assignments, align work, maintain relationships, prioritize work, collaborate, work individually on projects, meet tight deadlines, and effectively manage one’s own time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working individually and in a team atmosphere
  • Writing creative and technical course content, quizzes, exams, and performance evaluations
  • Performing editorial and stylistic reviews
  • Reviewing content to ensure it aligns with regulations, industry standards, and best practices
  • Working with subject matter experts (SMEs) to obtain and verify information
  • Working with the design team to identify relevant visual aids
  • Working with voiceover talent to submit and screen voiceover assignments
  • Inputting and testing the final product before it is published
  • Organize material and complete writing assignments according to Company writing standards
  • Maintain records and files of work and revisions
  • Edit, standardize, or make changes to Company training content and materials
  • Confer with customer representatives, vendors, executives, and/or subject matter experts to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be developed
  • Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes
  • Select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate the written material
  • Meet all agreed-upon turnaround times for materials
  • Perform other related work as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree OR six (6) months of experience in technical writing or educational course development OR equivalent training in a related field
  • Six (6) months of experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent writing, communication, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent personal computer skills with the ability to learn new software applications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

  • Training and instructional methods
  • Techniques and methods of planning, organizing, and writing various types of materials
  • Learning strategies used to identify how to select and use appropriate training, instructional, and writing methods
  • Grade level writing standards

Skill in:

  • Personal computer operation
  • Microsoft Office and other related applications
  • Team and industry collaboration
  • Individual contribution
  • Creative and technical writing

Ability to:

  • Work with course development tools and software
  • Conduct research to compose, review, illustrate, and edit technical documents, materials, and reports
  • Work with subject matter experts (SME) to obtain and validate information
  • Manage one’s own time and meet tight deadlines

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND KSA's:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Technical Writing or related field of study
  • Ability to apply learning strategies for writing procedures and processes using training and instructional methods
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 for Business
  • Oil, Gas, and/or Energy Industry experience
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations
